GARRETT BASCOM

Garrett Bascom is a lifelong Dearborn County native who is running to bring his hometown Hoosier values to Indianapolis. A graduate of South Dearborn High School, Garrett attended Mount St. Joseph University, where he obtained a Communication and New Media Studies degree with a minor in Leadership Development.

Garrett has been deeply involved in public service in local, regional, and state government for almost his entire life. What started as a childhood interest in attending Dearborn County Commissioner meetings in the 8th grade turned into a passion fueling his drive to serve his community.

Garrett has long been an advocate for his peers both on campus and in the community. First serving as class president for four years at South Dearborn High School. At Mount St. Joseph University, Garrett was involved throughout campus, including serving in the Student Government Association all four years, with terms as Student Body Treasurer and President. He was also one of two student members of the University Budget Committee which oversaw the universities budget.

After graduating from Mount St. Joseph University, Garrett attended Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, earning a full-tuition scholarship. While in law school, Garrett worked full-time for the Indiana Attorney General’s Office, serving in various roles such as Legislative Assistant, Assistant Director of Operations, Special Assistant to the Attorney General, and Deputy Attorney General.

In May 2020, Garrett graduated from IU-McKinney and became a father to twins with his wife Haley. Whether working full-time in law school and graduating early or studying for the bar while working full-time with twins in the NICU, Garrett understands the importance of hard work and determination.

In 2021, Garrett left the Attorney General’s Office to come home and work as a Deputy Prosecutor for Dearborn-Ohio County, where he represented the State of Indiana in multiple bench trials, jury trials, and contested hearings.

After years of public service, Garrett ventured out and established his own law firm serving Southeast Indiana. After seven successful months, Garrett announced the expansion of his firm, including an additional named partner, Jefferson Kisor.

Garrett met his wife, Haley, while a student at Mount St. Joseph University. They wed in the summer of 2017, prior to Garrett’s tenure in law school. Together, they have three beautiful children. Garrett and Haley are active in the community, serving in various leadership and philanthropic roles, including Secretary of the Dearborn County GOP and the former 9th Congressional District Young Republican Chair.

Garrett also serves on the Executive Committee of the Local Coordinating Committee of Citizens Against Substance Abuse (CASA) as part of his commitment to mental health and substance abuse advocacy.

GARRETT ON THE ISSUES

ADVOCATE FOR MENTAL HEALTH

In high school, Garrett was diagnosed with Complex Motor Tic, a version of Tourette Syndrome that affects physical motion. Garrett has watched close family members struggle with significant mental health issues, and this has ignited a passion within Garrett to address Indiana’s mental health crisis. He has seen firsthand as a prosecutor and as a public defender what has worked and where we need additional effort to improve the mental health system.

As a State Representative, Garrett will be an advocate for the increased allocation of resources toward mental health treatment to end the stigma preventing individuals from seeking or receiving help. Garrett believes Indiana should expand and promote treatment facilities and community development programs that prioritize the health and well-being of Hoosiers.

A FAIR APPROACH TO JUSTICE

Garrett believes in a firm justice system that holds people accountable, but it is also important to focus on preventative measures and a rehabilitation justice system that focuses on repairing offenders to prevent repeat offenders. He has seen firsthand the impact that proactive programming can have to change the lives of those involved in the justice system. He has been an advocate for expanding programs like the Jail Chemical Addiction Program throughout the state.

A SUPPORTER OF LAW ENFORCEMENT

As a former deputy prosecutor, Garrett will ensure law enforcement has the state funding necessary to provide adequate training, equipment, and resources to keep our communities safe. To address Indiana’s growing drug and mental health crisis, law enforcement professionals need support from legislators that will equip them with the tools and resources necessary to address the unique challenges facing Hoosier communities.

A DEFENDER OF FAMILIES

A father of three, Garrett will always put the needs of parents and families first. Garrett understands that what makes Indiana the best state to live, work, and raise a family are the traditional Hoosier values that promote God, family, and country. In Indianapolis, Garrett will stand up for the Hoosier way of life that is built on the foundation of family values.

As Representative, Garrett will oppose radical gender theories and ideologies from infiltrating Hoosier classrooms and be a voice for parents concerned about boys competing in girls' sports and using girls' locker rooms. Garrett will be the strongest advocate for Hoosier families who, like Garrett, want their children to be taught how to think, not what to think.

AN ALLY FOR GUN RIGHTS

In Indianapolis, Garrett will be a staunch advocate for our Constitutional right to bear arms. Garrett takes pride in Indiana being a constitutional carry state, and he will fight to ensure that right is never infringed upon.

STANDING UP FOR LIFE

The father of three children, including two twins born at 31 weeks who required a NICU stay, Garrett understands how precious the sanctity of life is. Garrett will always stand up and protect Indiana’s most vulnerable from radical abortion policies. In Indianapolis, Garrett will be a forceful advocate for the right to life and stand in the way of future attempts to ease abortion restrictions.

AN ADVOCATE FOR MAINSTREET

A small business owner, Garrett understands what it is like to sign the front and back of a paycheck. In Indianapolis, Garrett will be a watchdog for wasteful government spending and hold lawmakers accountable for how they spend the money of hardworking Hoosier taxpayers.

Garrett will fight to cut detrimental government red tape and ensure the responsible allocation of taxpayer dollars. Hoosiers are struggling because of Bidenomics, and Garrett understands the burden worsening economic conditions are having on Hoosier families just trying to make ends meet. As State Representative, Garrett will be a fighter advocating to let Hoosiers keep more of their hard-earned money.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT

Garrett is a staunch supporter of limited government. Too often government is seen as the solution to solve all societal problems. Garrett believes the opposite is true. In Indianapolis, Garrett will buck the status quo and fight to curb wasteful government spending, overregulation, and bloated government bureaucracy that are hurting hardworking Hoosier taxpayers. Garrett is a small government conservative who will always fight to get the government out of the way.
